Produces broad range of products for niche markets. Major markets include defense, municipal and commercial. Included among the heavy-duty vehicles Oshkosh produces are military transport vehicles, aircraft fire-fighting equipment, snow removal vehicles, stripped chassis for motor homes, buses, and walk-in delivery vans. Oshkosh Truck founded by William R. Besserdich and Bernhard A. Mosling in 1917. They had received patents in 1914 and 1915 for improvements on 4-wheel-drive capability. They approached several automobile manufacturers about using their designs to produce 4-wheel-drive vehicles, were turned down. May, 1917, Wisconsin Duplex Auto Co.in Clintonville, WI. incorp. Besserdich president and Mosling manager and secretary. Prototype vehicle, named Old Betsy, was a success attracting investors, many located in Oshkosh and co. relocated there toward the end of 1917 and changed company name to Oshkosh Motor Truck Manufacturing Co.
