Two framed membership certificates for Otto Heilbron in the Sacramento Turn-Verein club, 1884 and 1885. Heilbron was the son of August Heilbron, a cattle rancher, merchant and landowner who came from Germany. In 1881, Heilbron hired Nathaniel Goodell (who also designed the home that became the California Governor's Mansion) to build the Heilbron House, just around the corner from Leland Stanford's mansion. The house still stands as an office for the California Department of Parks and Recreation. From the Sacramento Turn Verein website: "For 170 years, the Turn Verein (pronounced "TOORN-fair-ine") has served as the center for German traditions in Sacramento. Founded in 1854, our historic club is where locals with German ancestryóand those with an interest in German cultureócongregate to socialize, study German language, celebrate, exercise, and carry on revered German customs. This includes Sacramentoís first, best, and biggest annual Oktoberfest celebration. Originally a gymnastics club (thatís what Turn Verein means in German), the Sacramento Turn Verein is the oldest still-active institution in the capital cityóand continues to uphold the organizationís original mantra: Frisch, Fromm, Frˆhlich, Frei (Lively, Pious, Merry, Free)."
