49er's Letter Re: Severed Head of Joaquin Murrieta. Joseph G. Eastland came to California in 1849 with his father and they founded the town of Oro on the Bear River, and took part in the gold excitement. In 1851 he entered the Union Foundry, under the direction of James Donahue. This light blue letter dated July 31st, 1853 is on Donahue's Union Iron and Brass Foundry letterhead to Edward Hicks Nashville Tennessee. Four pages, with original postal cover. After two paragraphs of social comments, Eastland describes the killing of Joaquin Murrieta and Three Fingered Jack. Joaquin's head was cut off and preserved in spirits to obtain the reward. The jar was displayed in Mariposa County, Stockton and San Francisco and later travelled throughout California. The letter is in excellent condition, no stains or tears, very legible.
