This photo was taken in a saloon in Skagway, Alaska with Soapy Smith and a member of his gang. Jefferson Randolph "Soapy" Smith got his sobriquet by selling soap in a paper wrapper and planting a $100 dollar bill in one of them. The lucky purchaser was one of his own men but sales promptly escalated. A con man, gambler, huckster, saloon owner he traveled to Alaska where gold was currency. He was met by a disgruntled man on a Skagway street where they exchanged hostile words and lead. It was 1898. Two men in the photo are wearing full framed Colts tucked into their waste bands with a miner between them. 3.75 in. X 4.75 in. Backing at 6.5 in. X 4.25 in. Please see photo for details.
