Hattisburg Mississippi wanted poster issued by The Southern Express Company for the apprehension and conviction of two train robbers wo, on March 19th, 1912, held up train No. 2 New Orleans & Northeastern Railroad, dynamited and robbed Southern Express Company's safe of a large amount of money. Both wore black masks. According to the company, about $5000 of the currency stolen was in new $20 gold certificates. A search for the serial numbers that are outstanding, after a 1933 recall, reveal that several were never recovered. Maybe there's a treasure trove of $20 gold certificates out there waiting to be discovered. Various news articles reported that the amount stolen was in excess of $90,000. At first, according to other reports, detectives were seeking two bandits, but evidence is strong that there were three robbers.
It took more than a year, and another holdup according to news accounts (Enclosed with poster), to make arrests. Arrested were Barney Lewis, who was apprehended in Louisiana, Jerry Ennis, who was found in Alabama and a third man, who was still on the loose. There are copies of news stories regarding the holdup. which are included in the lot. Poster measures 8.5"x 11" and in very nice condition. Please see photos for more details. Hattisburg Mississippi
