Amazing Ed Vebell color painting, "WWI, Over the Top". Infantry men going over sand bags under fire. Image size, 15" x 21.75"; matted, 20.5" x 27" (ink mark on mat). Signed in orange by Vebell at lower right. Excellent condition. Vebell used himself as the model for this painting, climbing the ladder. Vebel was a friend of our collector. This painting was apparently scheduled for a US postage stamp in 1960, but none was issued (not found in regular, commemorative, envelope stamp, post card, or air mail entries). Vebell signed a print of this painting which was slated for use as a US postage stamp. The print has a spot for the stamp in the upper left corner, which is lot 3480, inventory # 136921 in this sale. Vebell did commission work for the Post Office, and other works that were used on American stamps were a USPS series Scott #1489-1498 in 1973. Vebel (1921-2018) was also an Olympian for the USA at Helsinki in 1952 in Fencing. He did not medal. A choice original artwork.
