Independence, MO - P. Roberts, Mail Contractor 25 Cents Undated (1850s-1860s). Two choice AU unissued remainders from the stagecoach company.
A 25 cent and one dollar denomination from this stylish series printed on white bond paper by A. McClean lith. St. Louis. The A. McLean lith. St. Louis imprint's lithographed rendering is finely detailed, with four formally dressed passengers visible. The horse teams are well detailed, but running in the "artistic" equine fashion and not as horses actually run. The layout is identical with a stagecoach drawn by horses, well-detailed passengers, and issuer name at the top of the stage. Upper corners have "25" or "1" counters. The denomination is across and "Receivable for Stage Fares & other Dues" is underneath.
The Santa Fe Trail, an 800-mile commercial trade route between Missouri and Santa Fe since 1821, experienced its height of overland traffic after New Mexico became part of the United States in 1848. Stagecoach operators competed fiercely for passenger traffic and federal mail contracts, including Preston Roberts, who operated a weekly mail and passenger line during the early 1860s.
