December 2, 1851. This is a contract that calls for Don Jose Dolores Pacheco to Franklin Williams for the sum of $3000, plus a deferred payment of $500. The contract is signed by not only the principale Pacheco and Williams, but by Robert Livermore (Also known as Don Roberto Livermore) the person after who the city of Livermore is named for. Rancho Santa Rita Land was granted to the Pacheco Familia by the Mexican government prior to 1848 and has been the subject of major controversy c1850-1870 after California was admitted as a state. The California Land Act of 1851 (9 Stat. 631), enacted following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo established a Public Land Commission to determine the validity of prior Spanish and Mexican land grants. Land was unfairly seized following the Mexican-American War and legal battles have continued into the 21st Century. Condition of this important document is very readable. Another slice of California history and perhaps a missing piece of the puzzle in early land disputes and government theft of land legally granted to the people. Please see photos for more details.
