Early, extremely rare piece! Compliments of F.C. Knauer, Pacific Brewery, 9th & P Streets, Sacramento, Cal. A rosy-cheeked brunette with a white lace dress, pink ribbons, and a white hat with pink flowers stares out at us. Her portrait is made to look like it on parchment. A small calendar is attached at the bottom right. The border is a blue and white floral pattern. Broadside measures 16 1/2" x 22" in a 23" x 28" frame. The Pacific Brewery opened in 1858. An article in the Sacramento Daily Union, January 1, 1880, describes the operation and Mr. Knauer: "This brewery occupies a three-story brick building, covering an area of ground 80x160 feet. ... This brewery does no bottling but sells exclusively by the kegs or barrels. ... the establishment is one of the neatest and best operated on the coast, and Mr. Knauer's experience in beer-making is probably not surpassed by that of any other brewer in the State. He competes with any market, fills orders to any point aud makes no charge for drayage. His factory is one of the chief purchasers of hops in the city, but it does not confine itself to the local product but aims to secure the best to be had, both of barley and hops. There are few parts of the State which turn out as good a quality of malt liquors as Sacramento, and that of Mr. Knauer stands high on the list." Burt Collection
