Issued to and boldly signed on the back as shareholder by John Philip Weyerhaeuser, head of the Weyerhaeuser Company from 1914 to 1935. California. Dated 1907. Cert.#13. Handsigned by the officers. John Philip Weyerhaeuser, eldest son of Friedrich Weyerhaeuser, was born in 1858 in Illinois. He worked for and took over the Weyerhaeuser Company when his father passed away. In 1921, John Weyerhaeuser created the Wood Conversion Company to research and market new uses for wood. In addition, he bought four steamships to transport wood from the west coast to the east. In 1929, he oversaw the company’s construction of what was then the world's largest sawmill in Longview, Washington. Weyerhaeuser's pulp mill in Longview, which began production in 1931, sustained the company financially during the Great Depression.
His nine-year-old son was the subject of the notorious George Weyerhaeuser kidnapping in Tacoma, Washington. The boy was later released unharmed after payment of a $200,000 ransom.
