Vignette of Eagle holding olive branch on these thirteen unissued certificates of the Pacific Guano Company. The Pacific Guano Company was for twenty-six years (1863 –1889) the principal industry of Woods Hole. It was the result of the association of the Boston shipping firm of Glidden and Williams and two Cape Cod families. The islands along the west coast of South America were found to have guano (bird dung) several hundred feet thick, which was used in fertilizer.
