Classic Pacific Northwest Totem Pole, 15 feet tall. Hollowed tree, painted figures, wood splits with repaired wood splits, a classic. This 15' tall totem contains six figures. The top is a red bird with folded wings, a feature of the clan, which we were unable to identify. As an example, the thunderbird figure is a feature of Tlingit, and sometimes other related clan. Totems are read from bottom to top. This totem has a cut flat base, indicating it may have been trimmed through time, particularly for private or museum presentation, such that its original bottom is not clear. The bottom figure is a red faced multi-colored feather bird with upward extended ears, as an owl. Next up the pole is a turquoise colored frog (?) underneath a blue whale (?). The central figure is a flesh colored mammal, possibly a mink or badger. The second figure from the top appears to be a woman holding her baby. The top figure is an owl, the same as the bottom figure. Both owls appear to have the beak broken or removed. Our limited research points to the Puget Sound region and the Shomamish Clan, which used owls at the tops of the totems. This is a classic totem pole.
