Lot of 4. Includes 3 different assay memorandums and a modern print of a 19th-century photo. Pacific Refinery & Assay Office, 404 Montgomery St., San Francisco. In the early 1870's, Riehn & Hemme centralized their business to the 404 Montgomery location, where they stayed for another decade, until selling out to F. (Francis) Reichling about early 1882. Francis Reichling had previously been an assayer in Volcano according to a listing in Langley's Pacific Coast Business Directory for 1867, p. 435. This same reference lists his brother P. (Peter) Reichling as an assayer in nearby Jackson. Later F. Reichling is listed in Langley's San Francisco Directory for 1872, p. 548 as F. Reichling & Co., proprietors of the Pacific Gold and Refinery on the corner of Main and Harrison with an office at 334 Montgomery. 1) 1882 receipt for a deposit by the Anglo Cal. Bank for one gold bar, 99 ounces. Lists office at 400 Montgomery St. 4 x 11" 2) 1885 receipt for a deposit by the Bank of California, Gillespy & Childs. According to the 1890 San Francisco directory, they were agents for Daggett Ore Sampling Company (of Daggett, California), Yuma Mill and Mining Co (El Rio, CA), and Glencoe Cons. Mining Co. Clearly they were brokering mine, mill and assay transactions for a number of Western mines at this point. Two silver deposits, 1800 ounces total. 4 x 11" 3) 1891 deposit by the Bank of California. This form lists F& LF Reichling as proprietors. One deposit of amalgam, 886 gold fineness, by Dasso & Tiscornia, who ran a stage out of San Andreas in the late 1880's and early 1890's. The 1886-87 McKenney's Pacific Coast Directory showed they had a general merchandise store in San Andreas also. 5 x 11" Folds, stains. L. F. Reichling was F. Reichling's son and was listed as the secretary of the Kennedy Mining Company (Amador County) in the 1891 San Francisco Directory. 4) 5 x 7" modern copy of a photo showing the Assay Office with six men posing.
