Original wax sealer for the Pacific Union Express Co, which ran lines throughout the West in direct competition to Wells, Fargo & Co.
This sealer dates to the approximate 1868 period, at the peak of the Pacific Union activity. The sealer presents the information in a near identical form to the Pacific Union postal cancel, which is extremely rare. An example can be seen in our friend Schuyler Rumsey's sale of the John Drew Collection, lot 856. (no state designation). The Pacific Union Express had regular races with Wells Fargo from Reno to Virginia City via Geiger Grade. The two companies used buckboards or pairs of riders, each changing horses, and sometimes riders along the 24 mile route. The record appears to have been 59 minutes, though a more normal race time was one hour twenty minutes. This race is depicted on a canvas in another lot in this sale. Pacific Union was out of business by the end of 1869. The advent of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad completion in 1868 all but put a stop to the local stage coach mail business.
