These are not official US-issue spurs, but are private-purchase items. The irregular 8-point rowels are unusual, as are the longer lengths of the spurs. Commonly called “blacksmith” spurs, these were not well finished (as evidenced by the file marks on the spurs’ inner surfaces), indicating that these were handmade and not factory produced. Similar to “California” style spurs, these likely date from the 1870s. These items have arrived to us directly from the Custer family through the Dick Reyes Collection.
