This vintage beautiful gift basket is from Western Mono. Basket is 7.5" diam. x 5.25" h. This basket is coil & tightly woven dyed brackenfern which is sourced from he Sierra Nevada Mts. In beautiful condition. This basket was made by an elderly Native American woman in Alturas, California & given to Bertie Freeman-Clay in 1909. The Mono are divided into the Eastern Mono and the Western Mono, roughly based on the Sierra crest. The Eastern Mono are also known as the Owens Valley Paiute. The Western Mono traditionally lived in the south-central Sierra Nevada foothills. The western neighbors, the Yokuts, called them monachie meaning "fly people" because fly larvae was their chief food staple and trading article. That led to the name Mono (Wikipedia).
