Two volume set Paleontology of California, volumes one and two, 1864by Meek & Gabb, as published under California State Geologist J. D. Whitney. Original green cloth bindings, old California State Library bookplates Contents and illustrations excellent. Volume one outer spine binding worn. Vol. two is fine. Outstanding resource, and the first major publication of the fossils of California published at a time when gold production was all anyone was thinking about. Whitney and his team were near-miraculous in their field work, which ultimately led to the understanding of the various major "Tertiary" river channels and the dating of the various sequences. In exploration terms, this led to the understanding of locating the oldest sequence, which was the richest. The gold deposits in these fossil channels got less and less as geologic time progressed. Rare, particularly as a set.
