On Sept 10, 1857 the government of New Grenada (Panama) established a sum of $412,394 in compensation for the Watermelon Riots of the year before. On September 22, 1857 this Second of Exchange was issued to William F. Conant of New York for $200. Note: the Watermelon War/Riots allegedly resulted from a drunken American sailor stealing a slice of watermelon from a local street vendor. A struggle followed, a gun went off, a riot ensued, and in the end some 17 people were killed and 31 wounded. The $400k-plus compensation was one of several terms proposed/demanded by the US government to the Republic of New Granada which also included the transfer of several Bay of Panama islands to the US for use as naval bases.
