Rare, possibly unique, map of the Gold Hill Mining District. 4 x 5 feet, mounted loosely on board with Plexiglas covering. Chips, fading, some condition issues, but generally very good (on a scale of good to mint). "Map of the Gold Hill Mining District embracing the claim of the Caledonia Mining Company and others in the vicinity. Compiled from official surveys by T.D. Parkinson, drawn by Ross E. Browne", no date, no publisher. 80 feet = 1 inch. This unusual map shows the V&T RR along a line on the left side of the map paralleling the American Flat road. It extends from the Baltimore to the Overland. The Caledonia Tunnel & Mining Co. holdings are at the center. At right are a number of mills: Atlas, Paiute, Marysville, Empire, Imperial, all of which are located along Main Street of Gold Hill. Buildings are not shown. The Keystone and Justice are at right, Knickerbocker at far left. Parkinson published a well known pocket map of the Comstock. Because the folded map in hard "book" boards contains no text, it is not listed in bibliographies. Currently, there is no bibliographic reference of rare western maps. This Gold Hill map shows no original fold lines, and was obviously made as a wall map. We have not seen this piece in the 40+ years of business. The published pocket map of Parkinson's Comstock is dated 1875, and this Gold Hill map is certainly of that era, possibly circa 1874, the same date as the earlier Parkinson map of this sale which is a published wall map.
