Passenger Receipt for Capt. W. H. Taylor, Steamship Captain, Stateroom 30, leaving New York August 19, 1857 for Aspinwall and California. Captain W. H. Taylor was a California Gold Rush River Steamer captain. Taylor may have worked the inland waterways well before 1853, but the first appearance of his name in newspapers was on January 1, 1853, when he ran the Daniel Moore steamer on the Sacramento-Marysville route on the Sacramento River. Two years later in January of 1855, he was running the Cleopatra steamer for the California Steam Navigation Company from Sacramento to red bluff - further up the Sacramento river. By March, 1855, Taylor had taken a job in England, running the steamer Belgium from St. Katherine's Wharf to Ostend. A few years later, he was probably back in California, as he had a letter waiting for him in Sacramento in January, 1859. On the SSCA in 1857, he was probably returning from England to his home in California.
