Passenger receipt for the US Mail Steamship line, datelined Aspinwall, for Mr. Esquado to New York, first cabin, signed by the agent in Aspinwall. Here is one of the quandaries of the SSCA and the existing "data." Mr. Esquado's name, clearly written on the receipt, does not appear on the original published list of passengers, published in the Daily Alta October, 24, 1857, nor elsewhere. However, eastern papers noted that a "Parienil Esquerra" boarded the SS Central America in Havana, having arrived there from Valparaiso, along with a number of other passengers from Lima. This may be a case where the agent simply wrote what the surname sounded like, rather than what it really was.

Provenance: SS Central America Collection
