Pat Garrett signature on verso of 1881 Lincoln County citation regarding estate of AA McSween-"After five days of violence, the naturally-timid McSween had seen enough. He called out to the opposition, asking if there was someone who would accept his surrender and protect him from a lynch mob. Murphy man Bob Beckwith, who possessed a deputy U.S. Marshal's commission, stepped forward to do just that. But then, inexplicably, McSween reportedly screamed that he would "never surrender," at which point, all hell broke loose." from rudosonews. com.
