This document is the Articles of Agreement between Pat Reddy of San Francisco and John Gorman of Darwin, Inyo County setting up a mining partnership between the two. Reddy was contributing his mining properties in the New Coso mining district and Gorman was going to manage the partnership locally. The properties that Reddy contributed included the famous Defiance mine and it's furnaces, the Driver mine, the Custer mine, the Center mine, the Wolverine mine, and one-third interest in the Phoenix mine. Gorman was to act as the managing partner of the venture and was to devote his entire time and attention to it's interests. Gorman was to receive compensation (out of the profits only) of $350 per month. Reddy was not bound to devote any time or attention to the business. Gorman has signed the document on page four.
Pat Reddy earned a reputation as the "terror of Aurora" back in 1863 but studied law and became known as the one-armed criminal lawyer. In the mid 1870's, Pat gained interest in 18 mines in Cerro Gordo including the famous Union mine by frequenting tax sales of delinquent mining claims. Pat Reddy and his brother Ned were also proficient gunfighters which helped them to secure mining claims. In 1876, the Union mine was consolidated with the Santa Maria mine to become the Cerro Gordo mine. In 1879, Pat Reddy established residence in Bodie while his brother Ned ran for sheriff of Mono County. Of the two gunslingers, Ned was the most notorious, and listed in the "Encyclopedia of Gunfighters", surviving 6 incidents, which put him on part with Doc Holiday and Pat Garret.
