An early mining stock from the early days of the Inyo mining regions. Number 52 for 100 shares to NA Chandler, signed by French as Secretary and Lewis Peck as president. Dated Oct 13, 1863. We don't find many certificates from the early Inyo area of mid-eastern California, with perhaps a total of about ten known from different companies, most of which are unique.
The 1863-1864 period saw much prospecting activity after the establishment of Camp Independence, which came into existence to quell Indian attacks. White men had moved into the fertile Owens Valley producing tons of hay, etc., simply taking over the region by quiet force, which did not sit well with the local Native Americans. Miners soon found gold and silver in the Inyo range on the south side of the valley, and soon a number of mining camps emerged, primarily along the Owens River at first, then town developed where the mines were, at such places as Kearsarge and cerro Gordo, among others. Information on the early mines is scarce - more scarce than the certificates, and they are rare! Inyo Co. California United States of America
