This sword is a representative example of a Patriarchs Militant (Uniformed Ranks of the IOOF) society or lodge sword. It belonged to A. F. Hoska from Tacoma, WA., Major-General. The sword casing is highly decorous and the sword is engraved on the blade and on the handle with Hoska's name and initials. Odd Fellows Order of Patriarchs Militant. Known as the PM, members (known as Chevaliers) are dressed in semi-military uniforms and is considered the “show piece” of the Order. Once a member is initiated into the Lodge, he/she is said to hold the Initiatory Degree. As an initiated member, he/she has all rights and privileges of the Lodge, including the right to vote. The initiated member cannot hold office in the Lodge until he/she holds the other three degrees of the Lodge. The three degrees are the Degrees of Friendship, Love and Truth. Patriarchs Militant – Those Odd Fellows who have earned all three degrees in their lodges, and who joined an Encampment and earned all three degrees in that encampment, are eligible to join the Patriarchs Militant.
