A unique Pawnee Bill item, his wooden travel trunk! It measures 18.25" x 30" x 16.5". Buffalo Bill borrowed money from a banker in Cincinnati, OH and they repossessed all assets after he could not repay the loan. This trunk was found when the bank was sold in the bank basement. On the top and front is hand painted Pawnee Bill's Wild West. On the front Historic Wild West with a small portrait of Pawnee Bill on the left, King of Oklahoma Chief of the Pawnees. On the right a small portrait of May Lillie, The only Horseback Shot in the World. Attached inside the top lid is a photo of May. The front latch is missing and in its place is a wooden section with upside down writing- John Novak's "Special". Both side handles are missing. Also includes a copy of a Pawnee Bill cabinet card, Pawnee Bill's Historic Wild West, A Photo Documentary of the 1900-1905 Show Tours.
We have significant reports that the Pawnee Bill Show had several trunks made with identical rifles given away as special prizes. We attempted to verify this with descendants but were unable to do so by auction time. This adds an important element to the lot here, as these Pawnee Bill keepsakes have added significance. We received a report of two other identical sets, all period (c1890's)
