The Peabody medal is perhaps the most famous of all the mining labor wars collectibles. It was given to all of the Colorado Militia by Colorado Governor James H Peabody after the quelling of major labor strikes at Cripple Creek, Colorado City and Telluride, in which nearly two dozen were killed over several years of "unrest". The rukas began in Colorado City in 1901 and was rekindled in 1903-4. The Western Federation of Miners and other labor union sympathizers killed strike-breakers (miners) through various means, including blowing up the Findlay Mine Rail depot. Peabody sent in the Militia, arrested the union leaders, deported the hundreds of union imported strike force men and restored order.... or so they thought..... Labor wars at mines continued for another decade, with men killed in Idaho and Nevada. City: State: Colorado Date: HWAC# 99299
