Two pieces of Americana, documents from the early 1800s regarding getting support for a jailed woman & a legal writ for a man accused of fornication. The first is dated April 1827, Adams County, Pa., a legal writ, Grand Inquest for John Gibson, laborer, "did commit Fornication with a certain Polly Shenebrough & made a male bastard child." Signed by Frederick Smith Attorney General (By S. Ramsey). Also signed by Polly Shenebrough (Sworn) & Margaret Hoover, as Witnesses for the Commonwealth. 8" x 5.5". The second is a letter from the overseers of the poor at IPSWICH (Mass.) certification (all manuscript) that Mary Rouse, a native of Hartford, came to the House of Correction in Salem earlier in 1831 & not having any kin is now entitled to support from the Commonwealth under an act passed on Feb. 11, 1794. Signed by two overseers of the poor at Ipswich. Fine condition. 8" x 5.25". Scarce! 1.5" tear right fold.
Both documents have very little soiling. [
