Gorgeous pass printed by the American Bank Note Company. Pass no. 942, issued for 1871 to CE Noble, agent for Michigan Central Railroad. Signed by general superintendent AJ Cassatt. Highly attractive pass with underprint vignette of horses on either side of Pennsylvania state seal. Printed on thick cardstock. Excellent condition. Headquartered at Philadelphia, this railroad dates back to 1846. By 1882, the Pennsylvania Railroad had become the largest railroad (by traffic and revenue), the largest transportation enterprise, and the largest corporation in the world. The year this pass was issued (1871), the railroad reached Jersey City, New Jersey, and the New York City area via lease of the United New Jersey Railroad and Canal Company. Alexander Cassatt later served as the 7th president for the railroad (1899-1906), essential in the planning and construction of tunnels under the Hudson River to finally bring PRR's trunk line into New York City. Brother to artist Mary Cassatt.
