This cased set of percussion Colts holds an 1860 Army S/N 102550 (1863) cut for a shoulder stock on a three screw frame, and an 1851 Navy S/N 198261 (1866). The Army has numbers matching with the exception of the cylinder and wedge. The barrel has inspector's marks "GG" on the left and "H" (sub-inspector) on the right side. A double stamp may mean that the piece was inspected twice (ref. The Rampant Colt, Pate, 2018, p. 31). The letter "D" sub-inspector marks are visible on the shovel-head below the hammer and the bottom of the right grip. The barrel has been reblued and the bore is bright and fresh without pits. There are no visible cartouches on the grips. A cylinder scene is crisp. .44 CAL. is marked on the left side trigger bow flat. "COLTS/ PATENT" left frame. The trigger guard has a mustard patina. It is In-time working order. The Navy has original bluing with a plum colored patination worn grey at the corners; the bore is bright without pitting. All numbers matching including the wedge. There are no inspector's marks in the post war period (1866). About 60% silver plating is intact on the backstrap and trigger guard. The grips may have been re-varnished and show handling wear. A naval scene on the cylinder is light but still visible. .36 CAL. is marked on the left side trigger bow. The gun is in-time with a heavy main spring.
A period correct powder flask is present and in working order without dents. The case is made specifically for the '51 Navy and "60 Army in fine walnut, brass, and blue velvet. All other accoutrements are missing in action. These firearms are antiques and no attempt has been made to fire these guns to confirm its mechanical integrity. Nor should these guns be fired without the examination by a qualified gunsmith. Any attempt to fire an antique gun is at the risk of the owner and not consistent with the value of the firearm.
