Lot of eleven medals from Peter Schuttler's Wagon Works of Chicago. Established 1843, the company satisfied the demand for durable vehicles for the westward migration of the California Gold Rush of 1849. The Mormans used them to move to Utah in 1855. The factory employed about 100 people & produced 1,800 wagons a year, which sold for about $75. His son took over the business when Schuttler died in 1865 & by 1880 the company had 300 workers making over $400,000 of wagons a year. Automobiles replaced wagons & the company ceased operations by the mid 1920s.
The medals are copper, bronze & white metal. [Chicago Illinois
