Choice early Gold Rush stock certificate. No. 207, issued for 50 shares to Walbridge in Philadelphia in 1852. Signed by Newfold(?) for John C. Fremont as president. Also signed by secretary Alter. Not cancelled. Mining and dog next to safe vignetted. 7.5 x 9.5" Folds, clean. The Philadelphia and California Mining Company was founded in the same year on the basis of a land lease from John Fremont in the area of the Mariposa River. Although Fremont leased out mining claims to many companies, this is one of the very few he had a hand in.
