A choice collection of mementos from the first World's Fair, Philadelphia, 1876. Six items, all in excellent condition: 1) Centennial Souvenir booklet with fold out photo engravings of grounds and exhibition buildings and map of fairgrounds (4 3/4 x 4 inches; red cover. 2) Centennial Exhibition lapel pin, one inch in diameter; 3) Art Gallery building lapel pin, one inch in diameter (the Art Gallery building is the only building still standing on the site); 4) Rare stereo view card of a turret from the U.S.S. Monitor, iron clad navy ship from the Civil War; 5) Package admission ticket No. 74353, printed by the Philadelphia Bank Note Company; 6) Pennsylvania Railroad Centennial Depot schedule card: through trains and rates New York to Philadelphia and Philadelphia to New York (5 x 3 inches).
The Centennial International Exhibition, or "The International Exhibition of Arts, Manufactures, and Products of the Soil and Mine," was held from May 10 to November 10, 1876. It was the first official world's fair to be held in the United States and celebrate the centennial anniversary of the Declaration of Independence's adoption in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776. It was held in Fairmount Park along the Schuylkill River on fairgrounds designed by Herman J. Schwarzmann. Nearly 10 million visitors attended the exposition, and 37 countries participated in it.
