Although not rare, this is an important early California stock certificate. But what makes this one special is the reference on the certificate to John C. Fremont. It clearly states that Fremont is the president. It is, however signed by "ML Newfold, president pro tem for John C. Fremont." We have seen a few of these stocks come through our auction house lately, but none that reference Fremont. # 606 for 100 shares to Charles Wilkins on May 26, 1852. Signed by Newvold and secretary Alter. Printer was Grattan at the corner of Third and Walnut. The central vignette depicts a mining scene representing the company's California operations. The Philadelphia and California Mining Company was founded in the same year on the basis of a land lease from John Fremont in the area of the Mariposa River. Although Fremont leased out mining claims to many companies, this is one of the very few he had a hand in. An extremely rare piece of mining ephemera. One fold. Cut unevenly at left. No other corner, edge, discoloration or pin hole issues. Extremely fine.
