Very scarce. Inc. in Wisconsin. No. 100, issued for 1 share in 1873 in Milwaukee. Signed by Fred. Pabst as president and Best, Jr. as secretary. Not cancelled. Two vignettes: Empire Brewery and South Side Brewery. Printed by The Milwaukee Litho. & Engr. Co. 7 x 10" Folds, some toning. The Empire Brewery which became Best and Co. started by brewer Jacob Best in Milwaukee in 1844. Brewery run by Jacob, Sr. and his 4 sons, including Phillip Best, who took control of the company in 1860, becoming Phillip Best & Co. Best's daughter, Maria met steamship captain Frederick Pabst in 1860 marring him 2 years later. In 1864, he purchased a 1/2 interest in brewing co. becoming VP. In 1869 Philip Best purchased the Melms Brewery. During next 2 decades Best Brewery grew much larger. Part of the growth was due to the Chicago fire of 1871. That provided a new market for breweries in Milwaukee since Chicago breweries never recovered. By 1874 Phillip Best Brewing Co. was the nation's largest brewer. In 1888, Best Brewery was renamed the Pabst Brewing Co., which is still in business today.
