This lot contains 2 reprints of a photo of Clark Stanley, otherwise known as "Rattlesnake King." Clark Stanley was originally known to be a traveling American cowboy, but gained the reputation of the "Rattlesnake King" for selling snake oil that helped with aches, pains, arthritis, and bursitis. Stanley travelled America advertising his snake oil, but it was later found that he was selling FAKE snake oil. Clark Stanley's snake oil didn't even contain snake. When federal regulators seized his product in 1917, they found it was a concoction of mineral oil, red pepper, turpentine, and cow fat. But by that point, he had already been selling the product for 24 years. These photos show Clark Stanley advertising his "snake oil" to a woman who seems to be holding a bottle of it in a rural town setting, with Stanley's horses waiting next to him. This photo seems to be rare, as there are no copies online that can be found. Circa 1890
