Nice hand colored photograph of a YMCA championship team. 11" x 14". Photo has a few small tears on edges. The Hawaiian baseball league was formed in 1900. In 1914, the U. S. 25th Infantry Regiment--the former Philippine Islands Champions--began a string of four Hawaiian baseball championships. The YMCA and Hawaiian Plantation Owners used baseball for social control and its civilizing influence. It diffused protest and union militancy and helped divert workers from alcohol and prostitutes. It also eased U. S. and Japanese relations. Many Japanese workers were brought to Hawaii and baseball was a common ground.
