Photograph of "Old Savage Basin Camp, Tom Boy Mine, Telluride, Colo.," c1890s-1910. Black and white photo with picturesque San Juan Mountains as a backdrop to the camp in Savage Basin. "8 x 6" photo mounted on 11" x 9" card. Tomboy is a former mining town that in its heyday housed more than 1,000 residents, although reports differ with some saying several hundred. The Tomboy mine was one of the top three producers in the Telluride district. At an elevation of 11,509 feet, 3,000 feet above the town of Telluride, the Tomboy mine had many amenities for its hundreds of employees including a school, store, stables, YMCA with a bowling alley and tennis courts, and a club that held dances attended by Tomboy residents as well as residents from Telluride and surrounding mines. A stage arrived daily carrying passengers and mail. The mine closed in 1927 due to the ore running out and the town ceased to exist. Now a ghost town, there are several buildings and mining relics remaining. [ Telluride Colorado 1890s-1910
