This is an 8 in. X 6 in. photograph of John Wallace Crawford, AKA Captain Jack of California, mounted on a 10 in. X 12 in. mat. There have been several Captain Jacks throughout American history but he has been identified in this photograph for carrying an 1860 Army Colt along with a half-stock Pennsylvania rifle. Jack Crawford was originally from the state of Pennsylvania which explains why he would be carrying his trusted long rifle instead of a Plains rifle. He was severely wounded in battle from cannon shrapnel during the Civil War and learns to read and write while hospital bound. By reading dime novels his is influenced to move west. He finds himself employed as a Civilian Scout for the 5th Cavalry a month following the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He once carried news and dispatch for over 300 miles in six days. In his later years he gave lectures, chautauqua speeches, and poetry about western life for which he is best known. Good color contrast with some light spotting. Please see the photo for details.
