This is a photograph of Fremont taken May 4, 1888 in front of the same tree he used as a headquarters during the Bear Flag Rebellion in 1846. The tree is 46 feet in circumference and 275 feet high. It was named the Fremont Tree in honor of him. Fremont was in the area as part of a scientific expedition, but eventually took control of the American forces. In 1847, Fremont would become the military Governor of California and in 1850 be the first United States Senator from California. He would run for President of the United States in 1856 as the first Presidential candidate from the anti-slavery Republican Party. He lost to James Buchanan.
