Professional Photographer's Archive of San Francisco and the northern Redwood corridor, c1932-1935. Large scale personal archive of professional photographer Russell William Angel consisting of about 400 photographs ranging from 5 x 7" to 11 x 16". Born in Portland Oregon in 1898, Russell moved to Fresno as a youngster, creating a fascination with Yosemite (nearby), leading to a strong interest in photography. After a stint in WW1, Russell moved to San Francisco, where he also enlisted for WW2, later working for the Maritime Commission. Russell turned an amateurs' photography passion into a part-time profession, still retaining his "day job." Russell took photographs all over the San Francisco area, and one can easily see the progress of his photo quality through time. His shots of the PPIE area, Golden Gate park, fishing harbors, commercial harbors, Fisherman's Wharf, the Japanese Gardens, Chinese, coastal scenes, various buildings, and the San Francisco skyline comprise over half of the collection, and include nearly all of the larger prints. Among his best work are shots at the PPIE and Golden Gate Park after he met Madeline (Edwards?), who later became his wife, featuring her in pastoral, artistic park settings with unusually fine lighting and contrast. Russel traveled north to see the California Redwood State Park, and became entranced. He became a supporter, voice and photographer of the California Redwood League, and several of their pamphlets are included in the archive. About a third of the archive are photographs of these majestic giants. A large album contains about 100 different photos of the Redwood Park area, which was used as his personal sales album. Over time, many of Russell's photos were published. The archive includes many with the standard (at the tine) cut lines attached under each photo, as well as a photo inventory number (negative) on the reverse. His inventory is also included, though not all the photos on the inventory survive in this archive. Russel was hired for many professional shoots, from buildings to houses to interior design, as shown on the inventory pages. A small group of his Yosemite area photos are included.
