Two photographs of underground mining views, circa early 1900s. The first is a photo of four miners inside one of Silver Cliff Mining Company's (unnamed) mines in Colorado. The company prospectus, c1879, states: The Silver Cliff Mining property comprises the Racine Boy claim and the adjacent half of the Silver Cliff claim." The prospectus was found to have untrue claims by company officials, and may have originally been part of a scam, even though it ended up being in business for 24 years. The miners are holding a drill, and a handwritten adhesive label on verso states: "New Technology Rock Drill - 'Widow Maker' South Tunnel #1, Silver Cliff Mining Co. near Silverton, San Juan County, Colorado." The name D.A. Lyon and date 1902 also are on the label. No information could be found Lyon, who is possibly the photographer. Original 8" x 6" photograph mounted on 11" x 8.5" black card. The second appears to be from the same era, two miners underground, one standing, the other sitting with a miner's candlestick next to him. He is holding a rock drill which he is fixing, according to information on a label on the plastic cover. 4.5" x 7.5". [ Colorado 1902
