Hobart Lumber Mills, office of the Sierra Nevada Wood & Lumber Company, located in Nevada County, California. This is a nice set of 4 items for this lumber camp that has its roots on the east shore of Lake Tahoe during the height of the Comstock before the mills were relocated north of Truckee. Includes: 1) Gorgeous letterhead with two vignettes (mill and factory). Letter is dated May 17, 1902 and signed by C.T. Bliss who was one of the sons of D.L. Bliss, the Tahoe & Comstock Lumber baron of the 1870s and 1880s. Comes with cover. 2) Two rare checks. One is a VERY RARE unissued 190- Nevada Bank of SF check with gold foil Hobart Mills dateline (put on top of Overton dateline). Second check is a paycheck for the company issued in 1901 for 4 days work.

The Sierra Nevada Wood & Lumber Co. was formed in 1878 by Hobart and Marlette on the east shore of Lake Tahoe. The company owned almost ten thousand acres of timber along the eastern shore of Lake Tahoe along with a mill at Incline. The project was overseen by J. B. Overton, who also served as Superintendent for the Virginia & Gold Hill Water Co. Lumber was transported using flumes, steamers and then the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. The decline of mining on the Comstock corresponded to a decreased demand for lumber. In 1894 the company sold the dam at Marlette lake to the Carson & Tahoe Lumber Company. The mill and railroad were disassembled and moved five miles north of Truckee alongside Prosser Creek at the site of the new town of Hobart Mills (Overton).
