A classic, old painting of the scene "Pieta", with Mary holding the body of Jesus after removal from the cross. In the spirit of a chapter from Luke, Mary has a single sword in her chest, reflecting the sorrows of her lifetime. The upper portions of the painting are filled with symbolism, including the crown of thorns, a bloody foot step, and other images. The painting is 27 x 33". It has been removed from its original wood frame, restretched. The original wood support frame for the canvas was an inch shorter all around. A very crude, nonprofessional has attempted to paint those one inch borders to match the original artwork. There are many repairs to holes and tears in the painting, generally barely visible. No artist signature. We did not have the canvas dated, thus cannot be sure of the date, but we suspect 1800s. The painting came from the private Shirley Bovis Museum in Tombstone, with no attendant notes attached. This is a classical Christianity artwork. It is easily in the style of the great paintings of the 1600s-1700s, but looks a bit newer to us.
