Located 18 miles south of Tucson near the Sierrita Mountains and organized in 1877, the Pima Mining District had humble beginnings.

Deposits of copper, silver, lead, zinc and later molybdenum drew an interest to the area, including early operations conducted by the Emperor Copper Co. (1883), the Azurite Copper and Gold Co. (1897), Twin Buttes Mining and Smelting Co. (1903), Mineral Hill Consolidated Co. (1906) and ASARCO (1915).

The Pima Mining Company was incorporated in November 1951 to develop a copper discovery. This

project included the sinking of the 600-foot Alpha shaft, which began in January 1952. Production

of high grade copper ores was achieved in May 1952. This underground project ultimately shipped

69,000 short tons of direct smelting ore, averaging 6% copper, to ASARCO’s El Paso smelter by

June 1955.
