Merchandise License #388 issued to G.M. Davidson for $11.25 from Sierra County for 3 months on Jun 1, 1854 in Pine Grove. This allowed Davidson to sell merchandise from his house in Pine Grove, which became the local stage stop. Signed by J. Webb Nicholson and auditor Samuel Hinds(?). Black print on beige paper by Sierra Citizen Print. This very rare license is listed in J.E. Garvis's book, " Roar of the Monitors" and is the only one known to Garvis. According to her description, Pine Grove is located in at the base of Sugar Loaf Mountain between St. Luis and Howland Flat. Gold was discovered after 1852, the town quickly grew to 500/600 inhabitants, but the neighboring Howland Flat was growing more popular in 1864, most residents moved away along with the post office. The fire of 1874 left Pine Grove abandoned. Garvis Collection. Pine Grove, Sierra County California 1854
