Assortment of Pioneer Magazine, the first California magazine published in 1851. What makes these extra special is the fact that one of the contributing writers was Louise Amelia Knapp Clappe, who ventured from the east with her husband to the gold fields of California and began sending letters back home to her sister Molly. In 1854, the letters found their way to The Pioneer Magazine, which the editor s published each month. In these editions Clappe used the non de plume of Shirley. Later she would go by Dame Shirley and that's how it appears today. Her writings of life in the gold camps is considered to be the most insightful of any history ever written about that time. There are about 20 issues in this lot in varying condition. This is a great record kept by a great Lady. I'm biased. I've read her accounts on several occasions. Please see photos for more details.
