The Pioneer Photographer, Rocky Mountain Adventures with a Camera. William H. Jackson (Signed by author- Rare to begin with!), in collaboration with Howard R. Driggs, associate professor of English Teaching, NY Univ. Pioneer Life Series. 1929, World Book Co. NY. Illustrated from sketches and photographs made by the author. 314 pp. 5.5" x 8". Spine slightly worn upper and lower, corner wear, otherwise very good. Jackson, 80 years old at the time he wrote this book, had been a pioneer photographer who had "lived through the whole intriguing story of the days from tintypes to television." But, according to the book's introduction, "his photographic memory keen and clear, who can tell us all about the beginnings of this art that has come to play so vital a part in our everyday lives." "The Pioneer Photographer" is an autobiography of Jackson's experiences as a photographer who traveled across the U.S. In 1869 he won a commission from the Union Pacific to document the scenery along the various railroad routes for promotional purposes. He was asked to join a geologic survey to explore the Yellowstone River region. In 1870 he joined a U.S. government survey of the Yellowstone River and Rocky Mountains, and went on multiple other expeditions of the area. These photographs played an important role in convincing Congress in 1872 to establish Yellowstone National Park, the first national park of the U.S. Jackson exhibited photographs and clay models of Ancestral Puebloan dwellings at Mesa Verde in Colorado in the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. From 1890 to 1892 Jackson produced photographs for several railroad lines. From 1894 to 1896 Jackson was a member and photographer for the World's Transportation Commission. And so much more!
