Upton, Charles Elmer. Pioneers of El Dorado. The Nugget Press, 1906.

From the Foreward: It has not been my intention to sketch the lives of all El Dorado County’s pioneers; but rather to give, in the form of a few representative biographies, those events in our counties animals which are most worthy of being preserved as history, together with such anecdotes, both comic and pathetic, which would best serve to indicate what manner of people the early Californians work.…
It must be remembered that the early settlers of California were a most conglomerate mass of humanity, representing every grade of refinement and of the vulgarity; and the true narrative of such a people, or, in fact, of any real life, cannot be expected to resemble an Elsie Dinsmore Sunday-school story.

Chapter XII includes a narrative about the famous Wells Fargo detective, James B. Hume, who is know for the capturing and bringing to justice -- dead of alive -- a long list of murderers, thieves, and other criminals over his long career in law enforcement and with Wells Fargo.
