Placer gold from the Royal Mine near Angels Camp, Calaveras Co., California. Weight is 15.6 grams enclosed in a 1-inch plastic capsule. After their military service under John C. Fremont, Henry and George Angel set up a trading post in Calaveras County, California, to serve area gold miners rather than engage in the hard labor of mining itself. That post became a mining camp and eventually a town named Angels Camp. The area mines produced more than $20 million in gold. Mark Twain is said to have heard a tall tale at the Angels Hotel that he spun into his book, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." Here is about half of a troy ounce of placer gold from the Royal Mine near Angels Camp.
